At Smart Data Science Solutions, we believe that each software product should be customized to fit the producer’s needs. And because it’s 2018, that’s possible! It’s not only possible – it’s reasonable and affordable (it is the future and all).
Each level of the supply chain can enjoy three different benefits: streamlined data collection, visual access to historical data, and advanced analytics and reporting.
There is no one-size-fits-all software solution for poultry producers.
Employees along the poultry supply chain have unique needs, and even within similar positions (farm managers or lab managers, for example) companies operate differently. Many firms offer software products that are designed for specific segments of the supply chain – Laboratory Management Systems, Production Management Systems, Retail Tracking Systems. These products are designed for the “generic” poultry producing company and modified to fit the data that is collected. This results in inefficiencies, non-optimal user interfaces, and slower uptake among key employees. The software becomes something they have to use instead of something they want to use.
STREAMLINED DATA COLLECTION
ARE THERE CLIPBOARDS HANGING AT THE ENTRANCES OF GROW-OUT HOUSES?
DO FARM MANAGERS (OR ANYONE ELSE) EVER HAVE TO USE FAX MACHINES TO TRANSFER DATA?
Practices like these not only result in data quality issues that have downstream effects, they also represent real costs in terms of employee time management. All data that is being utilized efficiency is digital, so the opportunity to collect data digitally is an opportunity to collect it more accurately, quickly, and cheaply. Employees are more likely to be comfortable with or even prefer mobile applications than ever before and digital data collection is now the norm. Smartphones and tablets both serve as mobile data-entry devices and can be used safely, securely, and easily to collect important data.
VISUAL ACCESS TO HISTORICAL DATA
HOW MANY EMAILS DO STAFF VETERINARIANS HAVE TO SEND TO SEE VISUALIZATIONS OF THE PATHOGEN, LIVABILITY, OR GROWTH-RELATED METRICS FROM THE FARMS THEY ARE VISITING THAT WEEK?
HOW EASY IT IS FOR A FARM MANAGER/REGIONAL SUPERVISOR/ETC. TO VIEW THEIR CURRENT PERFORMANCE AND COMPARE IT TO THEIR HISTORICAL PERFORMANCE OR THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR REGION?
Everyone walks around with a small computer in their pocket. That computer has the capability to connect to a website,
where an employee can login and view all the data relevant to their position. A staff vet or farm manager standing on a
poultry farm should be able to take out their smartphone and view all the historical metrics for that farm – pathogen tests results, medications and supplements, growth patterns, livability, etc. This technology exists. Give your vets and techs the full picture at every site they visit. Free up more time for your farm managers to walk the barns and take care of the birds.
ADVANCED ANALYTICS AND REPORTING
WHICH CURRENTLY PLACED FLOCKS WILL BE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE POSITIVE SALMONELLA TESTS IN THEIR FINAL PRODUCTS?
WHAT IS THE PROJECTED IMPACT OF A SPECIFIC CHANGE TO MY OPERATIONS?
Another great thing about 2018 is that storage and computing power are cheap, and machine learning techniques are advancing rapidly! In a data-rich environment, machine learning models can understand and adapt to data to the extent that some outcomes can be very accurately predicted if enough prior information is available.
Smart Data Science Solutions combines the necessary elements to generate metrics such as Risk Scores (a prediction of the relative risk of a flock experiencing some outcome, such as Salmonella presence in finished products), KPI Scores (forecasts for ultimate KPI outcomes for specific flocks), or any other Outcome Score of interest. Having advance notice of an outcome allows producers to (a) act to avoid the outcome, (b) change operational parameters temporarily to account for the outcome, and/or (c) strategize about how to mitigate/enhance the outcome.
